Settling in / Address

Right now I'm just settling in and getting my living space set in a comfortable way. We managed to scavange some old furniture tossed away, and a couple guys have even built some rickety shelves themselves. Bob Villa I am not unfortunatly, but I am managing. Here's the address:

Spc. James Tourville
227 En Co
APO AE 09305

From what I hear it takes a couple of weeks for packages to arrive depending on the type sent.

Our patrols have been slow lately except for a few incidents . On one outing we received a report that someone was using a cell phone which isn't allowed for civilians on post. It turned out to be a Kuwaiti police officer and as soon as we flew in he flopped on the ground. Eventually it got sorted out but our leadership caught a bit of hell from a Kuwaiti Lt. Colonel. We were told not to be as bold.

On another trip outside the gate we ended up digging the humvee into a few feet of sand and ended up being stuck for nearly 3 hours out there. The Sgt. with us demolished the transmission trying to get it out, and then we spent quite awhile trying to tow the thing out. It did make the night go by faster though.

I've managed to catch another cold, I swear these army tents are a breeding ground for sickness. Well I'm nearly out of time an I need to prepare for the night shift. I hope all is well back home with everyone, thanks for all the comments you've been posting!

Hey Jim!
Vicki told me that you left for Kuwait, and gave me the link to this blog. I had no idea, I thought you were still in Florida! I am glad to hear that you are settling in, and please be safe!

James Vern,

I am glad to hear you are settling in. I guess I am naive because I didn't think "colds" would be an issue in a desert area. I suppose I need to do some research, huh? I was discussing the Persian Gulf area with my third graders because we had an article about the Iraqi elections in a student magazine. I shared that you were there and was hoping to share some of your writings with them. Would you be all right with that? They are very interested in the war and the way people live there. I know so lttle about ther area myself that it is embarrassing! Your descriptions are invaluable. They are writing friendly letters and I was wondering if you and your friends would be intrersted in any communications with them. Also, could you forward a list of kid-friendly supplies that you and your buddies would appreciate. We are always looking for a class project and what a wonderful experience it would be for them. It would mean so musch more to us if it was share with a personal connection. Please let me know if you are interested or of anyone else I should contact. I am so proud of you and I am eager to share your elegant prose! Be safe - Your cousin, Jenny Penny

Well, Jimmer it sounds like you still have your great sense of humor. It's freezing here in good ol'Ellenburg. Just wanted to say hello and tell you I've always got you in my thoughts. Love, Tiffany

Jimbo,
Hey, got you post on my blog. Yours is the best photo yet on there. I hear ya about the colds. I got my first one in years from Kendall last week. I spent pretty much the whole time in bed. Kendall was worse when she had hers. High fevers, having to be soaked down, fed bits of crackers, an attitude that made me want to call in Dr. Kervorkian.
Anyway, sounds like an interesting experience over there. Maybe we could pass a hat around to send you an armored hyundai or something to replace the hummer. Sorry, but my defense budget is a bit smaller than Uncle Sam's.

Ginny, I've tried to listen to the audio post you've made but the army computer here doesn't seem to want to play it. They restrict numerous things, and don't allow us to install software, which may be the problem I'm having. I'll try to check on it when I bring my laptop over to connect in.

Hey Laura! I hope things are going well in NYC, I'll try to catch you online soon.

Jenn, surprisingly the weather here does get cool. Not north country cool of course, but it occasionally does dip down into the 40's. I work on the night shift 11pm-7am so around three or four in the morning it starts to get chilly. From what I hear from others who have been here longer is that I should be thankful for the cold, as it's about to start getting insanely hot.

Here's a link to track weather in Kuwait.
Feel free to share any writings you like. If you want to know something specific just tell me the topic and I'd be glad to make a post about it. I hae a bit more free time now that I've settled in and I wouldn't mind at all.

I'm unsure of how many people would be willing to write but if you send letters I can try and see. I'd be glad to return any sent to me.

As for supplies I think most people appreciate:

Waterless Hand Sanitizer
Baby Wipes
Pens
Candy/Trail Mix/Coffee Etc.
Notepads
Cards/Board Games
Books/Old Magazines
Toiletries: Toothpaste, soap, etc.

Anything extra that's sent and people don't use gets put into a makeshift coffee shop where people gather, so none of it should go to waste.

Tiffany, good to hear from you, you should be out there fixing up that ice rink if it's cold!

Dan (a.k.a. Bingo Football), I have a feeling you're going to have a sore arm when Kendall views that comment. About the armored Hyundai... believe it or not they have tons of SUVs here, and more arriving on boats everyday. I guess they're cheaper than humvees and good for just driving around the base.

Thanks for posting everyone!

The other stuff is more of a pain, cus I lost the HD holding it (static shocks are a bitch). Let me know if you want that stuff and Ill make em.

So you give us an address that doesn't have any actual words in it, just a jumble of letters and numbers, and you expect we're going to send you stuff? Sheesh...
Well, procrastinating as I do, I'm not going to set any timeframe for you, but expect something from me by, oh let's say, July or so. Take care of yourself, Jimbo. And remember...if your gun misfires, or if you think you're picking up something cool and it turns out to actually be camel poo...drop it like it's hot.

Jim, Tracy told me about your writing. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how great you describe everything. It must be a real eye opener over there, with everything thats happening. I think of you often and hope everything goes well. let me know if venison or beef jerky would hold up in the weather there. I have a machine to seal airtight so it should be okay. I'll send some other little "prizes" as your mother would call them. Hope to see you soon.
stay safe. Aunt Diana

Hey Jimmer...Mom just told me about this site today. I know that I must live a sheltered life to not have heard about it yet. I hope that all is going well for you. I enjoyed reading everything on the site and I have got to say that you are an excellent writer. We are all very proud of you. Stay safe. Love, Erika, Dan & Evan

Jimi,
Did you really "accidently" get that Hum V stuck in 3 feet of sand? or was it the good old bored soldier game, "Who can get the Hum V stuck"?

Thanks for sending those out Sheetz, everyone is going to enjoy it. About the humvee... well lets just say the engine was shot and we overestimed our little off road trip haha.

Aunt Diana, Erika, Dan, and Even glad to see you found the site. I think beef jerky should hold up fine here. I doubt it would have the time to go bad with all the appetites here. I owe a few guys a good snack, they let me try their cuttlefish in a bag which was... interesting.

Jimmer,
Hey there cousin, how is everything? Mom reminded me about the site so I figured I would check in and say hi. It doesn't seem real that you are so far away. I commend you for being there representing our country; it is such an imporant job. As he might have told you, Matt came so close to going overseas as you have. I have to say I am thankful that he did not have to go, but I know that a part of him felt compelled to do his part. We are both so proud of you for doing just that. I discuss what you are doing with the kids, trying to make them realize how good we have things here in the United States. I want them to appreciate the freedom they have here and to be humbled and thankful for what you and every other soldier are doing to try to bring freedom to another part of the world. Take care Jimmer and be safe.

Tricia
